Our History
We've been supporting the homeless and vulnerable members of Maidstone for over 30 years and we will continue to be here whilst there is a need for our services and support

Maidstone Homeless Care began its journey in 1986 as Maidstone Christian Care, with a heartfelt mission to support people facing homelessness and vulnerability. Inspired by compassion and community spirit, Patricia McCabe and students from Maidstone Girls' Grammar School launched a simple soup run, offering sandwiches and hot drinks from the boot of Pat’s car. With a £500 grant from Maidstone Round Table, the foundation of a lasting legacy was laid.

Over the following years, local churches generously opened their doors, enabling volunteers to serve hot meals in welcoming spaces. The United Reformed Church on Week Street, in particular, offered vital support during those early years before we had premises of our own.
In 1989, Maidstone Christian Care became a registered charity, and by 1995, we had also become a company limited by guarantee. That same year, we opened the first Maidstone Day Centre in a ground floor flat at Lenworth House. In 2004, we moved to our current home at 15 Knightrider Street - a significant and challenging move made possible by the tireless dedication of local churches and supporters.

In 2013, we became Homeless Care (Charity no. 1151412), a name that better reflected our inclusive mission to support anyone in need, regardless of their religious beliefs or background. That same year, we were entrusted with the management of Goodsell House - a trust originally established by a local building firm to provide accommodation for homeless men. Now registered as supported housing with Maidstone Borough Council, Goodsell House offers a safe and stable home to 10 men experiencing homelessness. It is a vital part of our commitment to not only meet immediate needs but also provide long-term support and pathways to independence.

In 2024, we took another important step forward with the formation of Maidstone Homeless Care, reaffirming our enduring focus on supporting the homeless and vulnerable in our local community.

This spirit of unity, care, and determination continues to guide us today. As we look to the future, Maidstone Homeless Care remains committed to evolving our services to meet the growing and changing needs of our community. We believe that access to food, shelter, and compassionate support is essential for all, especially during times of crisis.

Our work is overseen by a dedicated board of volunteer trustees, who ensure the charity runs effectively and sustainably. Our core team of staff, based at Knightrider Street, work closely with a brilliant group of volunteers. Together, we run vital projects that offer practical support, kindness, and hope - helping adults take steps toward a more secure and positive future.
